A 38-year-old male living in Houston discovered that he couldn’t climb the stairs at work because his lower left abdomen hurt severely.

Because he had a virtual direct primary care doctor, he called his doctor to obtain help, even though the physician’s office was not in his area.After a few questions over the phone, the doctor thought that the most likely diagnosis was diverticulitis—the most likely diagnosis for a male with pain in the left lower part of the abdomen. The CT scan confirmed the diagnosis of diverticulitis and also showed a perforation of the colon, where a small amount of fluid was leaking into his body cavity from his colon. Pain medications and antibiotics were then sent to the patient’s local pharmacy.Over the course of a week, the patient healed—all without ever having to visit a physician’s office.During the healing process, the patient’s doctor monitored his symptoms all along the way to make sure that he was improving.It’s important to note that if the patient had required labs, the remote physician would have sent lab orders to a ‘draw station’ that was close to the patient. The physician then would have been able to quickly contact the patient with the results when the labs were returned.
